Winter in the USA - Summer in Bolivia - Lent Everywhere

Dear Friends,

Pastoral Center in Use!

After exactly a full year of construction following the dedication ceremony during Bishop Jerome Listecki’s visit last February, we have finally moved in to our new offices.

We want this environment to be available for pastoral and social activities not only of our parish but for the rest of the Archdiocese as well.

The annual Carnival holiday provided an opportunity to get the telephone and internet lines transferred from the old buildings, as well as the most necessary office equipment to be able to attend the faithful.

We began to use the halls already in mid January, taking advantage of the top floor for our annual catechist formation classes. We have yet to see all eight conference rooms utilized simultaneously, but the new center is indeed a magnet of activity. Besides Sacramental Preparation Classes, which began after Carnival, we have welcomed the various groups both parochial and extra parochial that meet regularly, such as the Legion of Mary, Youth Council, Older Adults, Christian Life Days (similar to Teens Encounter Christ), Voices of the Past Choir, School Religion Teachers, and of course our own parish pastoral team meetings. Some of the special events so far include the Carnival Retreat, Altar Server Day, Deanery Catechist Meeting, Labor Law Workshop for pastors, and an Episcopal Vicars meeting with the Cardinal and Auxiliary Bishops.

We are still in the process of equipping and moving into the new offices. We have a great deal of beautiful old mahogany furniture in need of repair and refinishing, that will be returned to service one piece at a time, but the overall reaction is one of surprise and admiration for the ingenious design, ample space and attractive look of the building.

We are deeply appreciative of every contribution, be it children’s Lenten Mite Boxes, summer Mission Appeals, individual and community donations, the occasional surprise inheritance, as well as your interest and prayers. May the Lord to bless you abundantly and guide all our efforts as “Disciples and Missionaries of Christ, so that our people, in Him, have life.”

Sisters of the Sacraments of Bergamo

Our parish Community is pleased to welcome Sisters Terezinha Favarini and Ivanir Gómez, of the “Sisters of the Sacraments of Bergamo”., who have taken up residence at our Risen Christ Chapel in Barrio Oriental (where the Sisters of Our Lady of Peace were previously). Founded in Bergamo, Italy, by Blessed Gertrude Comensoli (1847-1903 the Institute is dedicated to the perpetual Adoration of the Holy Sacrament, and to working with girls and young women, amongst other pastoral activities. Both Terezinha and Ivanir are from Brazil, where the Congregation has been established for some time. A year ago they opened a convent in Cochabamba and now in Santa Cruz with us.

Gospel Perspective

"They Shall Look on Him Whom They Have Pierced"

John 19,37—The Passion—Good Friday

Pope Benedict XVI chose this verse for his Lenten Message this year, highlighting God’s love which is both selfless in self-giving to us (agape) and yet passionately “in love” with us (eros). To look upon the crucified Son of God is to appreciate this infinite, unconditional and unearned love.

Looking upon Him who was pierced by the lance, the nails, the thorns, the scourges, as well as the insults and hatred behind all this violence, is also an exercise in understanding the human condition that we all share as sinners, willing and able to do evil. In the broken, battered and violated body of Christ the world’s sad reality is graphically displayed. If we can discover in the Cross the passionate yet selfless love of God, we shall also reveal the conspiratorial hatred within our fallen humanity. Their juxtaposition should provoke our reaction, one of “shock and awe”!

His naked body lowered from the Cross, strips us of all naivté before the reality of evil. And yet his utterly innocent donation clothes us with the transcendent triumph of divine truth.

To look upon Him who was pierced, is also to see His wounds transformed by the resurrection. The focus of His suffering becomes the fountain of our healing. “They shall look upon Him whom they have pierced” and “proclaim the greatness of the Lord”!

Bolivia Lately

Brought on, they say, by the “El Niño” ocean current, the rains began the day after Christmas. It rained 29 days in January and most of February as well. The Rio Grande, which flows about 60 miles east of Santa Cruz began to overflow its banks on January 17th, the situation grave enough then already to call for special collections to help those whose homes washed away. Since then the problem has worsened considerably and moved downstream. Whole communities have been evacuated, and the possible evacuation of the entire city of Trinidad (population 150,000—photo), capitol of the Beni Department, was briefly considered; 20,000 have been evacuated from the outlining areas. Many roads and bridges have been wrecked by floods and avalanches and the mosquitoes have multiplied along with the diseases they transmit. 34 people have lost their lives, as well as about a million head of cattle, and thousands of hectares of cropland, affecting food prices.

Recovery will take a long time. There has been a generous national and international response, but much more is needed. The Church’s help has been used mostly for medicine and basic food supplies. Our parish has contributed about 10 percent of the $10,000 collected so far in the Archdiocese of Santa Cruz.

Sacramental Stats

In 2006 we celebrated:

1796 Baptisms

450 First Communions

555 Confirmations

131 Marriages

75 Funerals

Baptism

About 75% of the Baptisms and Marriages were at the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Equipetrol, which has its own registry.

Of the 439 Baptisms in our registry, 89 (20.3%) were under one year of age, and 38 (8.6%) were 18 or older).

School Supplies

Public schools do not charge tuition, but they don’t provide textbooks either. Books and other school supplies, costing upwards of $50.ºº a child, can be a real burden for needy families, especially if they have several kids in school. So we channeled some special donations into helping these children get off to a good start for the 2007 school year. Others got new shoes.

MIRA AL QUE TRASPASARON

(Jn 19,37)

Letra y Música, P. Robert Flock

¡Mira al que traspasaron!

¡Medita al que torturaron!

¡Contempla al que crucificaron!

¡Y estremece tu corazón!

Porque pasó haciendo el bien.

Porque pasó diciendo la verdad.

Porque amó al extremo del amor.

Porque amó a este triste pecador.

¡Mira al que traspasaron!

¡Medita al que odiaron!

¡Contempla al que condenaron!

¡Y acepta tu condición!

¡Mira al que traspasaron!

¡Medita al que rechazaron!

¡Contempla al sepultaron!

¡Y abraza tu salvación!
